TenTwo Ministries

Supporting laborers in the field.

TenTwo Ministries supports people doing the work of ministry through counseling, discipleship, and our orphanage, school and bio-intensive farm in Nigeria.

Why TenTwo

Based on Luke 10:2

“The harvest is indeed plentiful, but the laborers are few. Pray therefore to the Lord of the harvest, that he may send out laborers into his harvest.”

Luke 10:2 (WEB)

TenTwo was inspired by this verse. We exist to mobilize and support laborers for the harvest.

“Pure and undefiled religion before our God and Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”

James 1:27 (BSB)
What we do

How we support laborers

Counseling

Many people serving in the field burn out. They work in some of the hardest places, often without community or access to trained counseling. We provide counseling and care to help them stay healthy.

Sarah Stewart leads our counseling and care for people in the field. She holds a master's degree in counseling. Before earning it, she spent 25 years in lay counseling, spiritual mentoring and leadership development, working with a range of prayer and counseling approaches. She is now completing EMDR certification and trauma training.

Our staff have more than 25 years of full-time experience raising up, sending and counseling people in the field.

Discipleship

Discipleship is at the core of everything we do. TenTwo is oriented around the Great Commission: making disciples who make disciples, and developing the leaders of those movements.

Here at home, that includes discipling, mentoring and mobilizing college students, and developing the next generation of Great Commission-minded student leaders.

Nigeria

We work alongside Safe Refuge Foundation, a Nigerian NGO that runs an orphanage, a school and a bio-intensive farm, to help it become self-sufficient.

Partnership

A college church plant

We partner with a college-focused church plant we helped start. We provide supervision of senior staff, grief counseling and support for students who need it, and ongoing discipleship through relationships built over many years.

Partnership

A church-based team in Western Asia

We helped develop and send a church-based, long-term team that now serves in Western Asia. We continue to support the team through ongoing care, counseling and advocacy for its members.

Exploring

New partnerships

We are exploring partnerships with the Collegiate Church Network and with our new local church, in discipleship, counseling, grief support and prayer ministry.

Nigeria

Safe Refuge Foundation

Safe Refuge Foundation is a Nigerian NGO started by one of the original children from a care center we served 15 years ago. That care center's vision included bush outreach to the Fulani people, a quality education, and discipleship and evangelism. The director has carried all of it forward.

Today the care center is home to 30 children, with 30 full-time staff. We have come alongside Safe Refuge to help it become independent of Western funding. We also help oversee and supervise its staff, and train its leaders to manage a large team: writing job descriptions, running supervision, and the rest that comes with it.

Discipleship runs through all of it. The children and staff are trained in sharing the gospel and making disciples, and do regular outreach to the community. The director leads them in regular devotionals and Bible study, and the whole center rises at midnight to pray. With a team of local pastors he reaches the surrounding community, and on a recent visit we saw 25 people profess faith in Christ.

Done so far

  • Drilled a 100-meter well, which has sharply cut disease
  • Added a solar pump so the well no longer runs on diesel
  • Moved animals away from the well and ran a water, sanitation and hygiene clinic
  • Bought the land
  • Renovated the buildings, including 9 bathrooms and 8 showers
  • Built a solar farm that powers the care center around the clock
  • Met the government's certification and oversight requirements to help prevent trafficking, including a surveillance system
Now: phase 2

Independence from Western funding

Phase 2 starts businesses that cover the care center's ongoing costs and strengthen the local economy. A stronger local economy addresses one of the main reasons children end up orphaned.

The school

The region has had no secondary school since a well-known local school closed years ago. Safe Refuge started a pilot primary and secondary school in a renovated part of the care center, and 50 students enrolled.

The owner of the old school building next door has agreed to rent it, and 200 students from the community and nearby villages have asked to enroll. Funding the move is the main need. The school educates the care center's children and is meant to earn enough to support itself and the care center. The director also hopes to offer free schooling and a daily meal to children whose families can't pay fees.

The farm

We bought 250 acres for a bio-intensive farm. It feeds the children and staff, and the staff and children planted the first season together.

The plan is to sell produce for revenue and to lease plots to local families a year at a time, so they can farm for themselves in exchange for work on the care center's land. Chickens and goats are raised as a business, and the children are learning animal husbandry.

The storehouse

The care center buys food in bulk at harvest after the rainy season, when prices are low, and stores it. It sells from the storehouse to the local community when prices rise in the dry season.

The storehouse also supplies the care center with food at cost. The profits and the bulk prices both go toward feeding the 45 people who eat at the care center every day.

Meal plans and recipes

The care center follows a meal plan TenTwo built around a balanced diet. Its recipe system sets how much of each food to buy and use, and allows food cost and usage to be tracked to the kilogram. With the storehouse, this keeps purchasing transparent and accountable.

Health care

Phase 2 adds an on-site mini-pharmacy at the care center, with a part-time registered nurse. The nurse treats the frequent cases of typhoid and malaria, handles first aid, and triages anything that needs to go to a hospital.

Accounting

TenTwo built an accounting system that tracks funds from the United States to their use in Nigeria. A full-time accountant in Nigeria runs it day to day. The accountant is overseen by Safe Refuge's board of directors and meets weekly with TenTwo for supervision, so the resources given are stewarded with care and excellence.

Next: phase 3 A fully self-sustaining care center.
